Designer homes: Riccardo Tisci buys Marina Abramovic’s old house

by

Givenchy’s creative director Riccardo Tisci has spent more than $3m buying a New York house from the performance artist Marina Abramovic.

The house, located in SoHo, is spread over two floors and features a modern and minimalist design as well as a pool. Abramovic reportedly sold the house to Tisci for below the market value, something that generally only happens between family members, as the pair share an intense and close bond.

(So close that when Tisci guest-edited Visionaire magazine, he featured a picture of the two in which Abramovic seemingly breastfed the designer.)

Of course, designer-celeb house swaps are nothing new – Jenna Lyons sold her oft-photographed Park Slope townhouse to Depeche Mode founder Vincent Clarke following her divorce – and Hollywood stars are always moving into homes that other famous people used to live in. After all, there are only so many people who can afford pools, private cinemas and particularly fancy postcodes.

Usually former celebrity ownership will bump up a property price but Karl Lagerfeld found it could go the other way earlier this year when he sold his New York apartment for $2m less than he bought it for. Karl had never actually even lived in the Gramercy Park gaff but he had installed custom-made bookshelves...a cost he’ll never recoup.
