Galliano To Lead Masterclass On Emotion At Prestigious Parsons

by

John Galliano has been granted a temporary teaching role at Parsons The New School for Design, one of the most prestigious design schools in the world and alma mater to Jason Wu, Alexander Wang and Tom Ford.

Lucky magazine reports that students at Parsons received an email saying Galliano will lead a three-day masterclass called ‘Show Me Emotion’, which ‘seeks to engage its participants by provoking the power of emotion in context of fashion practice and exploration of intuitive, perceptive manners of investigational making’. The title itself sounds a bit like a drunken rant.

The workshop will take place over three days with prospective students being chosen based on their current work and grades, and a short essay or video.

Galliano, who trained at London’s Central Saint Martins, is considered a towering and original fashion talent and during his tenures at Givenchy and Dior in the 1990s and 2000s was a designer who could be relied on to imbue a dress with powerful and visceral emotion. He is also a man known for histrionics and his now-famous anti-semitic and racist rants in a Parisian bar ended his career at Dior, and threatened to finish his career in fashion completely. Parsons students must be wondering just how much emotion they will be expected to show and what exactly the scheduled final-day ‘critique’ will entail.
