Kane sugar: promise of handbags sweetens the deal
Hold onto your handbag budget: Christopher Kane is set to launch a range of leather goods. Now won’t that fit perfectly into your life, and the crook of your elbow?
In an interview with WWD, Kane spoke of his intention to launch the line now that he has backing from French company Kering (previously PPR), which took a 51 per cent stake in his acclaimed label earlier this year.
'I’d love to see a Christopher Kane bag, a staple bag that could carry on for five years, 10 years,' he told the industry magazine. 'We have a rich archive of leathers and fabrics that could easily fall into a bag category.'
Speculation has been rife as to how that all-important investment might affect the London luminary’s output. At his show in the capital last February – a veritable ‘greatest hits’ that was inspired by brain waves and his own back catalogue, incorporating mini-kilts, feather trim and sumptuous velvet – it was clear that the deal had given Kane not only the confidence but the wherewithal to look at expanding what he does.
Don’t expect instant results from that injection of cash – Kane has always been a cautious and creative worker – but look out for this taster from his pre-collection, an embroidered plunge rucksack predicted to sell out wherever it touches down in the coming months. Not forgetting of course, a back catalogue that includes It-status neon wallets, glycerol-filled Perspex envelope bags, and some clutch candy from this season’s show too, in the shape of wire frame clasp purses.
'Everyone knows that me and Tammy take things slow,' he added. 'It’s going to be a constant investigation—and if the product’s not right, we’ll hold off.'
