Man Repeller writes a book
Leandra Medine, the unique voice behind the popular Man Repeller fashion blog has written a book, Man Repeller: Seeking Love, Finding Overalls, to be published in September (preorder here).
The 23-year-old’s musings on fashion and style have made her a presence within the industry for their honesty, wit, warmth and self-effacing, don’t-care attitude. She’s the one who wears the drop-crotch trousers whether they’ll earn her a boyfriend or not. Medine doesn’t see why style should equal sexy – and she was one of the first of the online community to marry all the selfies with side-splitting and insightful commentary.
Her book will take the tone of a memoir, detailing her life in clothes (specifically, ‘challenging’ ones) – including the time she forgot to take her socks off when she lost her virginity.
Medine isn’t the first blogger to turn her franchise into a book – The Sartorialist, The Selby and Facehunter have all produced tomes based on their sites. But somehow the magic didn’t translate: it didn’t update everyday, you couldn’t wile away hours at work flicking through it on the sly. Bloggers belong online, goes the argument, blooking (forgive the hideous neologism; it was done in a knowing way) doesn’t work because it takes away precisely what we want from them.
But part of Man Repeller’s charm is that tone of hers – the pictures are an added bonus. The industry has been waiting for a successful online writer to go analogue, as it were, and Medine could be just that person it. And she’ll no doubt have a great launch party.
