Rihanna beats Topshop in T-shirt row
It may seem odd that Rihanna had to take Topshop to court over its use of her own face, but she did, and she won. The row over the high street chain's use of her imagery on a T-shirt closed this morning with the singer claiming more than £3 million in damages.
It raises wider questions about the use of famous faces in fashion – Dolce & Gabbana recently came under fire from Peter Fonda after using his image in the film Easy Rider on a T-shirt. There's a fundamental creative link between popular culture and fashion, of course, but to what extent should that link be monetised and borrowing patrolled? Today's Rihanna verdict will no doubt force labels to think twice about the imagery they use.
