Venice Biennale: Britain's Got Talent

by

From tomorrow, Venice’s culture vibes, which are already pretty strong thanks to its spectacular architecture and gnarly water-streets, will go off the scale, as the Venice Biennale 55th Annual Art Exhibition rolls into town.

What of our country-folk at this high-brow bonanza? Here are the best Brits to watch at the upcoming event…

Mat Chivers: the Bristol based sculptor will be taking part in Glasstress: White Light/White Heat, a special event taking place at Palazzo Cavalli Franchetti where artists who have never worked with glass before will swap their usual materials, in Chivers’ case, wax, crystal and lead, amongst other things, to create a piece from the sharp stuff.

Marc Quinn: He of sculpting Kate Moss in that compromising position and Young British Artist fame will be launching a solo exhibition on the Venetian island of San Giorgio Maggiore which will feature some of his most famous works, including Alison Lapper Pregnant, as well as a special installation created for the exhibition.

Jeremy Deller: Sprinkling some English magic over the Biennale is conceptual video and installation artist Jeremy Deller with an exhibition of the same name. With a new film piece at its centre, the exhibition looks at British culture, from high to low, looking at its people, folklore, icons and culture. Chances of any #ladsontour with a can of Carling in a ‘YOLO in Benidorm’ T-shirt however, seem slim.

Bedwyr Williams: representing Wales, the comedy and poetry performer, who is also known to work with sculpture, text and photography. His Venice exhibition, The Starry Messenger, focusses on his preferred themes of Welshness, otherness and ‘worst case scenarios and the people that get caught up in them’, as the man himself puts it.
