What the Frock: Kim Kardashian

Kim Kardashian in Givenchy Haute Couture at the Met Ball in New York

Kim has always been one step ahead, and this is the perfect dress to spill stuff on – absolutely anything you like. It is held together by just two stitches (neither of which are visible owing to the fabric's intricate design), but Kim carries it off with aplomb. In summary, this is the perfect outfit if you only want your head to be visible in a rose garden and/or the ideal 'cover-up' if you just want to wear something else underneath but don't want anyone to know about it.

Right, Kim, I love the lipstick. And I like the hair. And congratulations on finding love with Kanye and impending motherhood. And kudos for becoming a proper fashion person by wearing a Riccardo Tisci for Givenchy gown to the Met Ball. You’ve made it. But a word about pattern on the red carpet: it’s really tricky. And because red-carpet gowns tend to be voluminous or have fishtails, as is the case here, they have a lot of fabric and that much patterned fabric can begin to put one in mind of home furnishings. Once the thought ‘she looks like a really pretty sofa’ has occurred, it’s hard to shift...

I take my hat off to Kim – it's quite something to make a formal dress somehow look like a very large swimming costume. The nod to Laura Ashley's nostalgic rose print is admirable but perhaps would've been successful used more sparingly. The inclusion of a hip-high split and eyelets distinguishes the garment as less swimming costume and more Jane Norman dress of the early Noughties, which is sort of good. I understand maternity dressing for the Met Ball must be a tricky business, but I'd keep the shape and print simpler next time.
