Rihanna gets people arrested via Instagram
If, like Rihanna, you have more than 32 million Twitter followers, then you hold some serious social media power, and the singer recently discovered just how puissant her posts can be when she got a string of people in Thailand arrested.
Last month, the Associated Press reported that a picture Rihanna posted to Instagram, a shot depicting her staring at the camera through bejewelled sunglasses as a slow loris (you know, they’re like sloths, only ever cuter in appearance) perched on her shoulder with the caption, ‘Look who was talkin dirty to me!’ led to the arrest of two men.
‘Phuket authorities were alerted to the picture [of Rihanna], and last night police arrested the two individuals who brought out the loris as a photo opportunity for tourists,’ a Phuket police officer told the AP, highlighting the now widespread problem of people using the endangered animal as a money-spinning tourist gimmick.
Now, it has transpired that another of Rihanna’s social media offerings from her holiday to Thailand, a series of tweets detailing a sex show she attended, above, has led to a third arrest. This time, a bar owner was arrested on charges ‘of obscenity and operating an entertainment venue without a permit’ according to TIME.
Don’t underestimate the power of social media…
