Happy Birthday Woman's Hour

by

Did you know Radio 4's schedule stalwart Woman's Hour was originally hosted by a man? When it debuted on this day sixty-seven years ago, the programme was on at 2pm, before the kids needed picking up from school and after the laundry and washing up should have been finished.

One of the first fashion features it ran was advice on how best to hang your husband's suit.

It's all change, nearly seventy years later. And thank God. The programme's fashion content has reflected how women's lives have changed over the years, in between Julie Birchill and Germaine Greer going at it hammer and tongs, and the first (much complained about) use of the word 'vagina' in public service broadcasting.

(Presumably, in the programme's rich history, there has since been something on how best to hang your own suit – or even better, how to teach your husband to hang up your suit for you.)

Presenters and guests have discussed Royal wedding dresses, thongs, posh parkas and giving up a.) bras (understandable) but also b.) jeans (apparently, we were going to do this in 2010). They've commented on trends such as the 'Liverpool look', discussing the painted ladies of the 'Pool on air, and how to go grey gracefully (hint: Kristen McMenamy).

So Happy Birthday to Woman's Hour, a national institution, but also a fashionable one.
