It’s a staple make-up look. A perfect fall back when you need to conjure a little drama and glamour about your person, particularly if you’re not a lipstick person. But the smoky eye rut is one that’s easy to fall into and before you know it, you’re channelling Dustin Hoffman in Tootsie. Again.

Luckily, for anyone lacking inspiration the S/S 14 catwalks provided a virtual catalogue of new material. Like lips have broken out of the staid beauty mould in recent seasons, now eye make-up is becoming more adventurous and modern too.

At Prada, lids came daubed in off-key mustards and greens with eye-popping results, while at Kenzo, a singular strip of white anti-liner was fresh and modern in equal doses. But it’s not all about the avant garde. For ultra-modern, but still undeniably dressed-up looks, there were super sized glitter flicks at Haider Ackerman, flashes of diaphanous lilac and powder blue shadow at Miu Miu and clever eye-enhancing contouring courtesy of Erdem. Plenty of material then for even the most staunch smoky eye stalwart to get a little creative.
