The inside track on Frieze 2013

by

The biggest event on the capital’s cultural calendar – Frieze Art Fair – starts this week, so we caught up with Frieze Masters director Victoria Siddall, who tipped us off about the trends and next-big-things to watch out for

Going solo
'A lot of galleries this year have decided to do solo presentations of just one artist which is a really great way of getting a full overview of an artist’s work. I’m really looking forward to seeing solo shows of David Hockney, Willem De Kooning, Henri Matisse and Richard Long and Alice Neel.'

Old Masters, New Trend
'I’ve noticed a real movement towards buying across different periods, so people who only bought contemporary before are now adding in ancient art or tribal sculpture to their collections. The Venice Biennale this year had a lot more historical work and exhibitions like Mark Wallinger’s response to the Titian at The National Gallery and Cy Twombly alongside Poussin at the Dulwich Picture Gallery have reflected this too. That’s why having Frieze Masters (classical period to 2000) alongside Frieze London (2000 to now) works so well.'

Paintballing at The Projects
'Frieze Projects commissions contemporary artists to produce works that respond to the environment of the fair and they’re usually interactive and fun. This year there’s a piece by Ken Okiishi that uses paintballs, an interactive work by Rivane Neuenschwander and a whole ‘Temple of Play’ created by Greek artist  Angelo Plessas.'

Discover the next big thing
'We have a section called Frame which is for galleries under 10 years old showing emerging artists who’ve not been seen at other art fairs, which means it’s a great opportunity to discover new, exciting work like at The Southard Reid Gallery where Prem Sahib will be opening up a ‘Soho nightclub’ in the fair.'

And the people-watching
'At Frieze we have collectors who come and buy art – there are lots of Americans – but we also get people coming here who just don’t go to other art fairs like visitors from Asia, the Middle East and Russia. Last year we had lots of people in their 20s and 30s – definitely a younger, cooler crowd than you’d normally expect.'
