Because we do things like teeth brushing and face washing so frequently, the actual method of how we do it often passes us by. You’re set in your routine, you’re on autopilot and almost do it with your eyes shut.

But wait. This is not good. Just because it’s a daily duty to brush teeth or wash face, it still has to be done right. The devil’s in the detail. Which is why we’ve been thinking about hair brushing, that straight-forward daily task that you’re practically led to do as you leave the womb. Problem is though, that all too often we are doing it completely wrong. Not brushing in the correct way. Either starting in the wrong place or not doing enough strokes (ideally you’re looking at 100 strokes a day, people).

We decided to take matters into our own hands and speak to hair stylist Adam Reed about the issue. How to brush, what to use and all the knotty details in between. Here’s what he kindly told us:

1. Always choose the right brush. 'They will cost a bit more, but brushes are an investment, as a good brush will last you a lifetime - Mason & Pearson do good ones.'

2. Start at the roots. 'Start at the roots and work through to the ends, which will help to naturally condition the hair as it works the natural oils through the hair.'

3. Don't forget your scalp. 'Make sure that the bristles work through your scalp – this will gently exfoliate the scalp encouraging hair growth.'

4. Use oil on knots. 'If your hair is knotty or tangled, work a small amount of oil through the knot to detangle it, then carry on through the rest of the hair.'

5. Brush a lot to ensure good gloss. 'Brush you hair with 100 strokes a day to maintain healthy glossy hair.'

6. Wash your brush weekly. 'Make sure that you wash your brush at least once a week. Use warm water and a little shampoo.'
