Tomboy gelled hair and fuss-free 'dos prevail at the Baftas

by

The bigger the better, isn't that how the saying goes? Not so at tonight's BAFTA awards where the lack of voluminous hair was as apparent as the lack of trailing gowns, replaced instead with sleek column dresses and even, gasp, women in suits.

The beauty mood in general has been understated but it's in the hairstyles that this sleek, minimalist boys club aesthetic is the most apparent. Deep side partings, oiled or gelled into place and even a smattering of chopped, sprightly crops made their way down the red carpet with none of the usual flicking or swooshing we're used to. This was hair by way of a barber shop, not a blow dry bar.

To say this grooming trend is severe would be an overreaction, but it's definitely sedate with an air of the serious actress attached to it. Our exception to the rule, and there's always one, would have to be Oprah's mane of fizzy black curls, but something tells us she's far too important to worry about statement-making hair anyway.

Here's our pick of the best tomboy hair at tonight's BAFTAs.

Amy Adams' oiled side bun

We know Amy Adams can give amazing hair, but what does it say that she chose to pomade her hair within an inch of its life into this graphic side chignon?

Lupita Nyong'o double sided parting

Lupita's crop is no revelation, especially after the red carpet hours she's already put in this year, but the deep side partings on either edge give it a playful, school-boyish feel.

Maggie Gyllenhaal's soft boy's crop

This is ultimate anti-awards hair. A brow skimming crop that your teenage nephew might sport. We estimate total styling time at around five minutes. Pass the DAX Maggie.

Ruth Wilson's gelled quiffy curls

Maybe it's the suit that made this a more masculine, than feminine, look on Ruth Wilson but it's the kind of oily, floppy fringe we can see on a Levi's male model circa 1992. A pretty teddy boy no less.

Gwendoline Christie's gelled down roots

We know from her Game of Thrones character that she's no wallflower, but Gwendoline Christie's gelled-down roots gave her a functional, fuss-free feel that's a world away from the usual red carpet frippery.
