Make-up artist Mary Greenwell downs brushes to launch new scents
Not content with painting some of the world’s most iconic female faces – Cate Blanchett, Jessica Chastain and Amanda Seyfried to name drop a few – Mary Greenwell has done it again. Launched two new knockout fragrances that is.
Because when Mary isn’t backstage at the Golden Globes or doing the make-up on an achingly-hip editorial for Hunger magazine shot by Rankin, say, the stellar make-up artist turns perfumer, with the assistance of scent-miester Francois Robert, and creates the kind of multifaceted, heavyweight perfumes that make us want to sigh and sniff in equal measures.
“Both are extremely creative, but totally different processes,” says Greenwell. ‘”When I see a client, I have about 2 hours to make a beautiful face even more beautiful. With fragrance it can take around 6 months, so I’ve learnt to be patient.”
Just launched into Harrods this week, you’ll find Fire, £130 – a warm and woodsy unisex eau de parfum – and Cherry, £95 – a sweet, dark berry blend with musk undertones.
“Cherry, my new fragrance is a young, playful energetic scent full of effervescent notes," says Greenwell. "I do very much have my clients in mind when I'm creating my fragrances as I work with such spirited, warm and amazing women. Women like Cate Blanchett, Jessica Chastain, Christy Turlington and Kate Moss. What's nice is that they all wear them too.”
What’s weird is that for each of her scents, Mary’s method is to choose the name first, then work backwards to fit the notes around the name. Despite the unorthodox approach, whatever she’s doing, it works. Both Fire and Cherry have instantly scaled the heights of our olfactory wish list for this coming Valentine’s day (clever Mary). Now all we need is a session with her to do our date night make-up and our desirability is set to skyrocket. Well, maybe…
