Fruit of the Loom: four words forever etched into our memories, because they appeared on the labels of half the sweatshirts in our childhood wardrobe (and yours, right?). The American sportswear brand was a staple throughout the late 80s and early 90s, with its cotton basics and its little fruit-bowl logo. This month Fruit of the Loom has unexpectedly returned to our consciousness, because they're launching the new premium label Seek No Further.
The announcement got us feeling all nostalgic. Our teenage years, let's face it, were all about the shopping. Those glory days consisted of endlessly wandering around the high street, always in a gang of at least four girls, and with barely a couple of quid between us. As well as surreptitiously painting all our nails using the tester varnishes at Miss Selfridge, we had the joy of shopping for mood rings, chokers and friendship necklaces that split in two (half for you, half for your BFF). Clothing-wise, hours were spent trying on floaty floral dresses, skater trainers (though we didn't own skateboards) and – the height of sophistication – bodies (mind the poppers under your crotch).
An afternoon on the high street looks completely different today, but we'll never forget the shops where we spent those formative years and the brands we were so devoted to. If you remember any of these, chances are you're in your 30s too.
