Every trend of the 00s, and how Mariah Carey nailed each one
We've seen the 70s, 80s and 90s revived in the last two decades alone, so it's only time before the first decade of the 00s is pillaged for all the bling and garage references it's worth. Jenny From the Block will be trending on YouTube and Victoria Beckham will be resurrecting the head-scarfs and leather from her Dane Bowers days on a New York catwalk before you know it.
When retro gets millennial, you can look to Mariah Carey for all the style inspiration you need. Never a wallflower or someone to take on anything by halves, the queen of dressing to be seen sailed through every trend worth knowing, bum-slung jeans to hankerchief skirts, between 2000 and 2009 like a glittering butterfly.
Are you ready to let cropped combats back into your life, or are the comfy benefits of velour starting to seem like a brilliant idea once more? If the answer's yes, let Mariah be your guide through the fashion of the 00s...
The denim mini skirt: no wardrobe was complete without a cut-off jeans mini post Y2K, and Mariah's collection of them was characteristically 'statement'.
Boho: the 00s was the decade when luxe hippie attire was fast-tracked to the top of the must-wear list, thanks to a paisley clad Rachel Zoe, and Mariah was embracing it to the extreme years before Sienna Miller got her Glastonbury VIP pass.
The low-slung wide belt: thick strips of leather hung loose at the hips were a mainstay of the boho trend, and Mariah even managed to give them a glam makeover.
Printed maxis: riding high on boho's glory the printed maxi got its day in the sun, and it's done a good job of staying there. You try and go to Ibiza without spotting 1000 even today.
Peasant blouses: have we mentioned that boho was huge? This extended to voluminous sleeves and embroidered cheese cloth too. Now we know who Isabel Marant's been channelling ever since.
Bollywood: a close cousin of boho is the bright colour and prints of India's outfits, meaning you only had to look east to glam it up a notch.
Pointy boots: shoes that don't concertina your toes together? 2003 is not interested. The longer the point was, the better it peeked out from beneath your extra long bootcut jeans.
Party on the top, casual on the bottom: evening tops and jeans became BFFs in the 00s with flash-baring glitter bustiers and handkerchief boob-wraps sitting side-by-side with stonewash flares. Sure, Britney and Christina wore plenty of this too, but Mariah's top made out of an actual magic butterfly* wiped the floor with the lot of them. Did we mention the removed waistband too? Classic noughties.
*probably.
Denim everything: the 00s were the decade of denim, and a maxi skirt made of the stuff really was the piece to have. Did you split your jeans up the inner seam to customise your own version?
Statement jeans: even the humble jean had a make-over, all embellished this, frayed hemlines that. There was no such place for a plain old 501 in this decade.
Handkerchief skirts: hemlines were all over the place before we realised a simple midi was the bee's knees. See also Sugababes.
Burlesque: Moulin Rouge hit cinemas in 2001, and Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim, Mya and Pink stripped to their knickers to celebrate in the Lady Marmalade video. Of course Mariah was in on the act.
Velour: it's possible that Juicy Couture made enough money between 2000 and 2009 to set up a small country thanks to the appeal of its strokable track-suits. We'll bet Mariah had one in every colour a My Little Pony comes in.
Belly chains: your jeans are practically a couture piece, and your abs have been hardened to allow for a handkerchief top, so why wouldn't you say, 'screw it, more is more' and sling a bit of bling around you midriff too? Also, waistband customisation once again.
Cropped bomber jackets: and when you've made as much effort as Mariah did embellishing your lower half, why cover it up with a long coat.
Crystal tattoos: if you're as big a princess as Mariah Carey, simple ink is no good for a tatt when you could instead have gemstones. Like dutiful followers of Mariah fashion we all stuck crystals where we shouldn't, especially when the word hipster was more readily used to refer to pelvis clinging jeans than bearded dudes. Maybe a stick on butterfly is better than jewel-encrusted thongs that were popularly worn poking out of jeans at the time? Maybe.
Waistcoats: Kate Moss usually gets the credit for breathing life into the waistcoat in 2005, but Mariah was a champion of its cause too. Either way, we all had one.
Sideboob: with many tops and dresses going backless in the 00s, sideboob suddenly became a regular sight on the red carpet. The era of alternative cleavage had dawned.
Bandage dresses: bow down Hervé Leger, thanks to Mariah in the 00s, the dress that's tighter than a well-fed python was back for good.
Glamoflage: with bling in the air, even camo clothes glittered, and came in increasingly shrunken shapes and sizes. Mariah was all over it.

Uggs: around 2003 a sheepskin revolution happened and everybody who was anybody padded around in cosy Ugg boots. Like a true ambassador of a trend Mariah channelled hers head-to-toe with the world's first, and probably last, chunky knit boob tube.
Wrap-around shades: there's one time in history that Bono's been in fashion and that was when every star was covering their faces with ombréd perspex in the early 00s. When you're a diva like Mariah, massive sunglasses are obligatory, so this trend suited her down to the ground.
