John Galliano banned from Eurovision

Another title to add to the list of ‘Jobs John Galliano Doesn’t Have’ – most recently it was lecturer at Central Saint Martins, this time: dresser of Israeli popstars.

According to a story in the Times of Israel, the Israeli Broadcasting Authority has commanded the country’s Eurovision entrant, Moran Mazor, to break off her arrangement with the man known across the universe as the disgraced designer.

Mazor, who has been not-at-all condescendingly characterised by the press as an ‘ethnic Adele’ – presumably for her dusky looks, big voice and corresponding dress size, had given an interview in which she expressed excitement about having Galliano work on her costume for the event, which will be broadcast across Europe on 18 May.

It was after this that her agent received a memo from the IBA instructing the star to drop Galliano, who was removed from his post as creative director at Christian Dior two years ago after making anti-Semitic statements to strangers while drunk in a Paris bar.

It has been one hell of a hangover for the Gibraltar-born designer, who became one of the industry’s most flamboyant and feted names for his fantastical creations at the august French house. Since his downfall, Galliano has had to pay a fine of 6,000, and has also attended rehab.

He made something of a comeback at the New York shows last February, with a three-week stint behind the scenes at Oscar de la Renta. While some of the finale gowns bore his signature in rich colours and baroque elegance, Galliano himself was nowhere to be seen at the show.

Still, as enjoyable as Eurovision is, one can’t but help feel his absence from the ‘nul points’ roster is no bad thing for the re-building of Galliano’s personal brand. So we’ll just have to make do with Jean Paul Gaultier dressing the hosts instead.
