The skies may have been grey so far during the autumn 2014 collections, but that's not stopped show-goers finding colourful ways to keep warm in New York, London and Milan.

Brightly coloured coats have overtaken the editor staples of camo and crisp navy this season, splashing a rainbow of shades across front rows. From cool blues to fizzing tangerine, this paintbox of outerwear falls into some distinct colour categories.

Code red

Like scarlet lipstick, a bright red coat has an instantly impactful effect on the simplest of outfits. 

Just look what it can do to an otherwise unobtrusive jeans and jumper or shirt combo.

A slim or clean-lined shape is all you need when the colour makes this strong a statement.

Although that's not to say a more complex shape can't work too - especially alongside a chic black base.

Tangerine dreamers
