26 Pearls of forgotten fashion wisdom from Miss Piggy
Pam Hog. Calvin Swine. The Notorious P.I.G. Call her what you will but when it comes to fashion, Miss Piggy is one wise porker. With Muppets Most Wanted just out in cinemas, we pay tribute to the star who puts the “sty” into “style”…
1. Take inspiration from iconic films
2. If in doubt, go Grande Dame
Fiery-locked British fashion legend Vivienne Westwood is Miss Piggy’s designer du jour. She wowed at the Muppets Most Wanted premiere in an emerald green satin Westwood couture gown worthy of Liz Taylor. Dame Viv also created key Piggy pieces for the film, including a Harris Tweed houndstooth check coat with matching beret, a silver hand-embroidered floral lace frock and a couture ivory wedding gown. “Vivienne Westwood is fabulous, just like moi,” explains La Piggy. ‘When I asked her to design this wedding dress, she was thrilled and I was thrilled. The only one a bit iffy about it was the Frog.” Nothing a karate chop can’t solve. Hiiiii-yaaa.
3. Don’t be odd
Miss Piggy advises everyone to “ensure you own an even number of shoes”. Wise words.
4. Pearls before swine
From signature pearls to statement necklaces, over-sized cocktail rings to dazzling diamonds, Miss Piggy adores a bit of jingle-jangle. As the sow herself says: “The one item I couldn’t live without is jewellery. It don’t mean a thing if you ain’t got that bling.”
5. Step off, Gaga
Miss P has little time for Lady G, who five years ago wore a certain green creation by designer Jean Charles de Castelbajac. “Yeah yeah yeah,” she oinks dismissively. “I saw Gaga in that coat. But hers were faux-frogs. Only moi has the real Kermy draped around her neck.”
6. Your wardrobe should always make a statement
“Mine says: ‘Hey, look at moi! I'm wearing haute couture… and you're not!’”
7. Mutton dressed as pig
Ms P isn’t just about gowns ’n’ garms. Her besnouted beauty regime is on point too. Smoky eyes, black liner, heavy lashes… Just call her Amy Swinehouse. No wonder MAC signed her up to her own make-up collection two years ago. (We assume it was tested on pigs). She even released her own fragrance the evocatively-titled Moi.
8. Hog couture
Check out who’s pressing flesh with the man himself while wearing straight-off-the-runway Marc Jacobs. (That’s his fall 2009 collection, fash fact fans.)
9. Play to your strengths
“Always accentuate your best features by pointing at them. And conceal your flaws by sucker punching anyone who has the audacity to mention them.”
10. No sweat
Back in 1982, in no way whatsoever influenced by Jane Fonda, Miss Piggy released her own workout album, Aerobique. But none of this boring, sweaty, out-of-breath business for Miss P. It included the hit song “Snackcercise” and many of the moves could be performed sitting down or in your sleep. Also note how her workout mat is littered with champagne and chocolates.
11 Don't be a fashion victim…
“If you enter a room and it's assumed that you lost the bet, go home and change,” says the sage porker. “And never wear anything that makes it impossible to enter a room without turning sideways.”
12. … Be a fashion editor instead
In 2011’s Ronseal-titled movie The Muppets, Miss Piggy played the plus-sized editrix of Vogue Paris, complete with Chanel tweed suit, Zac Posen dogtooth blazer and a blates Anna Wintour-inspired sleek, chic bob. The front row awaits…
13. Don’t you know who I am?
Talking of which, Miss Piggy has been a frow fixture at catwalk shows for the past decade. Here she is at Opening Ceremony in 2001, Heatherette in 2005, Michael Kors in 2010 and Julien Macdonald in 2005, wearing one of the embellishment-obsessed designer’s own creations. Tracey Emin sure looks impressed. Probably recognises a fellow artist.
14. Don’t imitate, innovate
“My style? It’s unique. It only works pour moi. Plus it’s copyrighted so don’t even bother.”
15. But try telling that to these Miss Piggy copycats
16. Miss Wiggy
Inevitably for a starlet of such longevity, Miss Piggy has. She’s done long, short and everything in between. She’s straightened, scrunched and streaked. She’s done Farrah Fawcett flicks and the Rachel. However, she denies having a perm during the 80s: “Moi's hair has natural curls. So does my tail.”
17. How now, brown sow?
In the mid-Noughties and again last year, she even went brunette and pulled it off with ease. Maggie Gyllenhall and Sharon Osbourne, anyone?
18. The tao of the sow
A few of our favourite Miss Piggy proverbs. “Clothes are like friends - they should always complement your appearance.” “Being stylish means constantly maintaining your image, updating your look and destroying old photos that show you with big hair and wearing Spandex.” “Style is all about expressing your inner self, capturing your personal ethos and, most importantly, spending someone else’s money.”
19. Cover girl
Miss Piggy know that a magazine cover is worth its weight in free shoes, so has graced many an august journal down the years. She cemented her status as the breakout Muppet as far back as 1979 with her People and LIFE splashes. She’s since popped up on Cosmo, Playboy, The New York Times Magazine, Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue. La Piggynista has also been placed in the pages of POP wearing Prada and InStyle sporting custom creations by Prabal Gurung, Jason Wu, Brian Atwood and Giles Deacon. And now here she is in the biggest of them all: Never Underdressed. What. A. Woman?
20. Be awesome
“I don’t care what you think of me, unless you think I’m awesome. In which case, you are right.”
21. Go the whole hog with accessories
Miss Piggy goes biggy and opts for maximum glamour when she accessorises. We’re talking tiaras, tulle headgear, feather boas, sky-high stilettos and long silk gloves. Less isn’t more, my little piglet pupils, more is more.
22. You can never have too many shoes
Asked recently by a US interviewer how many pairs she has, Miss Piggy replied: “Are we talking domestically or internationally? I’ve got warehouses in several countries.”
23. Love your curves…
The Haus Of Pig has never been shy about flaunting her killer curvaceous figure. She’s kicked against porcine stereotypes her whole career and prefers to be called the politically correct term “superstar”. “Remember that style comes in all sizes,” she oinks. “Therefore the bigger you are, the more style you have, n'est ce pas?”
24. … But don’t love them TOO much
She might be a pig but Miss P doesn’t have her snout in the trough *all* the time. “Watch what vous eat,” she advises. “My top tip? Never eat anything you can't lift.”
25. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder
And as our mud-loving mentor adds: “It may be necessary from time to time to give a stupid or misinformed beholder a black eye.” Hiiiii-ya!
26. Be happy with who you are
“And if this doesn't work for you, then be happy with who I am.”
