Charlotte Tilbury: 'My husband has never seen me without make-up'
As make-up artists go, it doesn’t really get much better than the Tilbury. She’s known for creating the most beautiful of faces on the catwalk and tends to Kate Moss and Laura Bailey, amongst other very.important.people. She collaborates with just about every designer worth their salt, from Tom Ford to Donna Karan and is as iconic as her tumbling swathes of red hair. So it was with great pleasure that Never Underdressed headed to her Queen’s Park studio to while away and afternoon talking all things makeup.
‘It all began when I was aged 13, at boarding school in England. I had very blonde lashes and suddenly realised what mascara could do. When I went home to Ibiza in the holidays, everyone’s reaction to me was so, so different.’ she told us, ‘I was more popular, more attractive and got way more attention. I loved it!’ And ever since, Charlotte has had an all-out obsession with make-up, with this year marking the 20th year of her career.
What are Charlotte’s golden rules then? She confessed to us a total hatred for foundation – ‘it’s ageing and usually sits in the lines of the face – she’s never met a single woman who doesn’t look better without make-up and she feels that eyes are an area she completely owns. ‘Eyes are my thing, I am obsessed with them and feel they are something I own, as it were’, she told us, sporting the most textbook perfect and smoked up to perfection feline flick that’s ever been. 'My husband has never seen me without make-up on', she told us, 'and my son saw me the other day for the first time ever with no make-up on and said, 'Mummy, where are your eyes?'', she recounted humorously.
For your own little bit of Charlotte time, check out the House of Rock’n’Kohl event at Selfridges from 17 to 23 June. Hosted be Charlotte, there will be makeovers, manicures, beauty advice and live debates, with a variety of industry figures including Nicola Formichetti and artist Chris Levine. The event, a first for both Charlotte and the department store, will look at beauty from all angles, going deeper into the cultural and social references around what is now such an intrinsic part of daily life. It is rumoured Kate and Cara will be making an appearance too (but of course). As always, Charlotte is one step ahead.
