Meet the stylists behind Lupita's red carpet triumphs and Robin Wright's rebirth (and more)

by

Behind (almost) every actress on the red carpet is another remarkable talent: her stylist. And though we know stylists exist, we never get to see them – so it's easy to forget that celebs aren't making those impeccable fashion choices all by themselves.

This week The Hollywood Reporter has chatted to and published pictures of some notable red carpet stars, from Elisabeth Moss to the Fanning sisters, alongside the unsung heroes who help them choose their clothes. So who are they, and which memorable looks have they been responsible for?

Micaela Erlanger

Styles: Lupita Nyong'o, Michelle Dockery

Michelle Dockery was Erlanger's first major client, and was so impressed that she recommended her to everyone's favourite new star of the moment – Lupita Nyong'o. Erlanger first styled Dockery in Alexandre Vauthier for the 2013 Golden Globes, while her first look for Nyong'o was a Prada dress for the Toronto Film Festival.

She was also responsible for Nyong'o's stunning caped Ralph Lauren dress at the Golden Globes and Dockery's Prada gown for the Emmys.

Karla Welch and Kemal Harris

Style: Elisabeth Moss, Amy Poehler, Olivia Wilde, Robin Wright, Pink, Justin Bieber and Zooey Deschanel

Welch and Harris work quickly. 'Karla will have racks, but it’s, "Here are the three things I love the most," and it’s usually one of those – you don’t want to spend five hours trying on dresses,' says Elisabeth Moss. 'The fun part is wearing the dress, not trying them all on.'

'Kemal doesn't push,' adds Robin Wright. 'There's no forcing the style.'

They styled nine actresses for this year's Golden Globes, including Moss, Wilde and Poehler.

Tara Swennen

Styles: Kristen Stewart

Swennen and Stewart have a close friendship: 'Sometimes fittings are like full-on therapy sessions,' Stewart tells The Hollywood Reporter. Her key looks often come from Chanel, like the dress she wore for the 2007 Toronto Film Festival and the hotpants she chose for the recent Chanel haute couture show.

'We really try to push the envelope,' says Stewart. 'Tara reminds me that I like to be daring, that I like to do things differently. She pushes me in the best way.'

Samantha McMillen

Styles: Dakota and Elle Fanning, Jodie Foster, Evan Rachel Wood, Dianna Agron

'Dakota is Old Hollywood, but a younger version of that, and Elle is a mix of bohemian and sporty,' says McMillen, who's been working with the Fannings since 2012.

Penny Lovell

Styles: Rose Byrne, Anne Hathaway

Byrne and Lovell met in 2009 at a Dior dinner and hit it off. 'Some actresses don't have a stylist, but I would find that very difficult,' says Byrne. 'It's hard to look cool and yourself on a carpet.'

The looks Lovell has styled include Hathaway's recent Oscars look, and Byrne's Emmys outfit – plus the Elie Saab jumpsuit she wore for the 2012 SAG Awards, which Byrne describes as 'the biggest risk we've taken for the red carpet'.

Cristina Ehrlich

Styles: Margot Robbie, Penelope Cruz, Tina Fey

Robbie hit it off with Ehrlich immediately: 'The first thing she did was offer me a beer,' she remembers. 'I thought: "Oh, we are going to get along so well. This is my kind of stylist." ... I love working with Mama C.'

Ehrlich describes Robbie's Golden Globes Gucci dress as 'modern Hollywood glam. Sexy, but not over-the-top, and Margot loved it.'
