Andrej Pejic and the renaissance of the septum ring
No one saw this one coming. But, suddenly - incredibly - we're starting to look upon the addition of a septum piercing as a wholly plausible, fashion accoutrement. Genuinely. This isn't band-wagon jumping either, we've been admirers of the fashion septum for a while now, as evidenced by last week's Scandinavia-inspired beauty shoot. When subjugated with ethereal, glowing skin and unfussy (but not swampy) hair, that little metal ring extending from the tip of the nose becomes a thing of curious beauty. And, it's quite possibly the last bit remaining bit of the face we're yet to fetishize. So fetishize we must.
Here's model, Andrej Pejic, at a fundraiser last night wearing a big, dangly chandelier hanging from his septum, looked not hard-as-nails but utterly ethereal - almost angelic.
It helps of course, if said septum ring is hand-crafted by the house of Givenchy, as Andrej's is, but nevertheless, fashion has embraced septum piercings of any persuasion. I'm into it. And have been since seeing Grimes dripping in Givenchy on the cover of Dazed last year. OK, perhaps I won't be racing to Camden to get my own (I fear catching it on a hair brush), but the important thing is, our common perception of the septum piercing has shifted from big, scary, Riot Grrrl appendage to jaw-droppingly beautiful.
Hopefully then, this means we can drop the out-dated idea that facial piercings = angry woman.
