A lesson in bare-faced beauty from Costume National

by

Just when we thought we'd shaken off nineties minimalism in favour of the infinitely more glamorous proposition of the seventies, Costume National happened. Or more specifically, Lucia Pica happened. Having pioneered the triple blush trend back in London at Roksanda Ilincic, for Costume National, she once again brought her masterful brush work to the fore with a look that was nineties inspired - yet executed with such beauty that thoughts of grungy, tired-looking models immediately evaporated. In their place, beauty adopted a newfound purity with a seemingly make up-free look that we're all going to want to master come autumn.

'This is beautiful nakedness,' said Pica, wielding her hero product of the hour - MAC's Pro Conceal and Correct Palette of nine complexion maximizing shades. 'It's about achieving a super soft base with a velour texture, created by precisely buffing concealer around the eyes, nose and chin'. So the pinky shade from the concealing palette melted dark shadows away at the inner and outer corners of the eyes, allowing a darker tone to sculpt the cheeks.

Feathering MAC PRO Bone Beige Sculpting Powder onto the cheeks, (imagine the up and down movement of a small child using crayons) she let Luna and Shell Cream Colour Bases add a glimmer of a highlight. Brows were filled in and straightened, lashes curled and liquidized with some clear mascara, while lids were draped in a gloss-balm hybrid to add definition without resorting to anything so obvious as colour.

Hair was a similar story of beautiful simplicity. James Pecis gathered bottles and bottles of shampoo from his team's kit bags and washed models' hair before blow-drying it smooth with a centre parting. A kiss of the curling iron on this product-free, virginal hair gave a nod to movement without looking in the slightest contrived.

'This is the typically cool Costume National character evolving into something just a little more polished,’ said Pecis. Cool. Seemingly bare-faced, and utterly charming. The Costume National girl was in fact a masterclass in the art of looking good (apparently) naked.
