Aye aye captain! The rise of the nautical nail

by

During the long and arduous drive back from Glastonbury ten days ago, I realised something. Having traipsed across those Pilton fields and seen more denim cut-offs and crop tops than Topshop could ever make, I realised that nails are still a big, big thing. Yes, they’ve been on the up for some time now but being at the festival was cold, hard proof of their popularity. Not false lashes and red lipstick, but serious, perfected manicures.

In seasons gone by it’s been a real mix of nail shades on show – everything from lurid lime greens to bright pops of pink and full-on nail art  – but this summer there’s no escaping one particular trend: the nautical nail. From teenyboppers dancing to Alt-J to the likes of Alexa Chung and friends tip-toeing around the hospitality area, white, navy or seafaring shades were a sweeping trend across all types and ages. Literally, every single nail I spotted was a variation on a maritime colour.

Glastonbury aside, it’s been the order of the day for A-listers across the globe recently too. At couture week, Rihanna rocked a bloody cool set of white-y/grey nails while model Karlie Kloss won the best nails prize at the CFDA Awards last month with her chic, matte navy set. There are more, a whole lot more, in the gallery above. Take inspiration from this lot and be sure to team yours with a Breton top and, er, a trip on someone’s yacht.
