Céline And Jesse Are Back And We're Very Excited About It

by

Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke, the stars of our favourite film franchise, were at the Tribeca Film Festival last night for a screening of Before Midnight, which hits UK cinemas on June 21 and is driving us feverish with anticipation in the meantime.

Delpy and Hawke, along with director Richard Linklater, have, with 1995’s Before Sunrise, 2004’s Before Sunset and this new film, bestowed upon us an incredibly rare glimpse into love in real time. Of course, it’s fiction, but – thanks to brilliant acting and largely improvised dialogue – the whole thing has always felt as real as those endearing little wrinkles that have gathered around the leading actors’ eyes.

Judging by the recently released trailer, Céline and Jesse have finally got it together and are parents to twin girls. ‘We met about 18 years ago, we kinda, sorta fell in love,’ Jesse tells their dining companions. Kinda, sorta, of course, because they fell in love on a train in Vienna as innocent young students only to spend the next ten years living on separate continents; then they met again – older and wiser, and married in Jesse’s case – in Paris in 2004.

Now that they’re actually together, it seems like they might be on rocky territory. ‘This is how people start breaking up,’ the always endearingly bolshie Céline warns Jesse, after she’s already admonished him for ‘ogling girls’. Well, you wouldn’t get two hours of cinema out of a they-lived-happily-ever-after-without-a-worry-in-the-world plot, would you?
