Everybody loves a supermodel

by

Sometimes it feels like that the age of the supermodel - that is, mid-80s to early 90s - will dominate fashion forever. That era provided us with a fashion plate as yet unrivalled, a commercial and cultural sense of womanhood as a strong and powerful concept - one which, although we talk constantly these days about femininity and feminism, the industry hasn't quite matched since the days of Cindy, Christy et al.

So what a treat then to know that they're all still out there, living fabulous lives and turning up to things in order to look gorgeous. This was quite a week for them, with Cindy Crawford out at the Return to Zero premiere in Los Angeles; Christy Turlington-Burns (she's now married to actor Ed) at a VIP screening in New York hosted by denim brand Citizens of Humanity; and Naomi Campbell out in London for the opening of the Fendi store.

In fact, after the Fendi party, Campbell went to an event at the London Eye, where she was the subject of a talk - one of series on influential and famous personalities from the capital. One was about Queen Victoria, so she was in good company.

Comforting though it is to see those still-familiar faces on the red carpet and in our Last Night's Looks round-up, there are of course pretenders to their crown. The new crowd of (arguably) supermodels has put the legwork in to public appearances this week too, with Cara, Karlie and Arizona Muse also out and about in London, particularly at the city's coolest new spot, the Chiltern Street Firehouse.
