Full throttle lip looks from the Met Ball

by

We've already discussed the hair risk takers from last night's Met gala shindig. But what of the lipstick wielding beauty braves? The stars who shunned nude tones (the mainstay of awards season) in favour of a fully-saturated pout in brazen shades of deepest red, violent purple and unashamed terracotta.

It's not often Laeticia Casta and Selina Gomez find themselves on the same beauty billing, but last night they, along with a handful of similarly bold-lipped actresses, models and musicians, made a commitment to the kind of shocking statement lip that's recently been sorely lacking from the red carpet.

And it's so much more than an 'old Hollywood' red. In fact, these lips packed a punch of pigment that felt decidedly gothic and at times, even macabre. Joan Smalls's intense 'Dairy Milk' purple lip is a case in point. There was nothing subtle whatsoever about the shade or its satin texture. But then, that's the entire point.

Suki Waterhouse was near unrecognisable in a blood red velvety lip colour that only served to make her look more the serious model, less the giggling girlfriend, than we've seen in recent months.

Selina Gomez showed her beauty nouse in a deep merlot lip shade, eschewing her usual classic red and earning beauty kudos in the process.

Contrasted against her pale skin and simple hair style, Laeticia Casta's tomato red lip shade popped with an intensity that felt regal and rustic all at the same time.

You just never know which way Beyonce will fall. Luckily last night we were treated to the full throttle version replete with vinyl oxblood lips.

It's been a while since we were in this close proximity to a terracotta lip of the variety Amber Heard sported on the red carpet. It's powdery texture just served to make it all the more retro. But in a good way.
