Kate Moss acts in the new Alexander McQueen campaign
The spring 2014 Alexander McQueen campaign was released today, revealing Kate Moss as the new face of the brand. It's the first time Moss has starred in a McQueen campaign and the images, shot by Steven Klein, portray the 40-year-old as a sort of fierce and futuristic warrior, all cropped hair and steely gaze, attired in Sarah Burton-designed leather holding a miniature doll version of herself.
In the short film that accompanies the still imagery (also shot by Klein) – a creepy and menacing video inspired by the 1960s cult film Peeping Tom – Moss looks quite different to any of her other many and varied incarnations over the years, all yellow hair and eerie expression, sort of a like a David Bowie or Tilda Swinton version of herself.
Of course this isn't the first time Kate Moss has been at the centre of an Alexander McQueen story; indeed she was a muse for Alexander McQueen the man and Alexander McQueen the brand as far back ago as the mid-1990s.
In 1996, she donned scifi-inspired make-up and a wig for British fashion's enfant terrible.
A year later, she was back on the McQueen catwalk in snakeskin and a blonde wig.
Off the catwalk, they were close friends.
They partied hard together.
Visions of decadence and glamour and straight-up fashion.
They danced together for a special project called Black in 2004.
And in 2005, after several high-profile brands dropped Kate Moss after video footage of her using cocaine became public, Alexander McQueen took his bow wearing a 'We Love You Kate' T-shirt. That's true friendship.
Alexander McQueen's autumn/winter 2006 show featured an apparition of Kate Moss, a hologram of the model in a floating organza dress, an inspired and imaginative catwalk vision quite unlike anything ever seen before.
In 2010, just days after Alexander McQueen's death, Kate Moss, along with Naomi Campbell and Anabel Nielson, modelled his last-ever collection at the Fashion For Relief Haiti charity show at Somerset House. All three had been close to the designer and were visibly upset at the show, which raised more than £1 million for Haiti.
When British supermodels took to the stage for the closing ceremony of the 2012 Olympics, Kate Moss was of course wearing a Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen dress.
Because, since Sarah Burton took over at Alexander McQueen, Kate Moss has continued to be a huge supporter of the brand, a woman who perfectly encapsulates all of its daring, its innovation and its ethos. So it makes complete sense that Moss is the star of the spring 2014 Alexander McQueen campaign, in fact it almost feels overdue.
