Reasons to be cheerful on this bleak bleak day

by

Today is, according to the Daily Mail and the sense of dread currently residing in the pit of your stomach, the most depressing day of the year.

A storm battered the UK and Ireland overnight while temperatures are dropping to -30C across North America and Canada. You’ve already reneged on your New Year’s resolutions, you’re broke and George Osborne is saying you’ll probably be that way forever. It’s grim.

But even amidst the gloom, there are reasons to be grateful.

Be grateful for male models. Currently in the news as London Collections: Men gets underway in London, perennially good-looking.

Be grateful for Anna Dello Russo, and her unwavering commitment to fashion. And give thanks for her little dog.

Be grateful for smiles, chicer even than a pout.

Thank the universe for Lena Dunham. She’s bringing us the third series of Girls this week. Praise be.

Say hurrah for bubblegum pink: still all over the high street and the red carpet. A colour that you can’t be glum in.

Express your gratitude for the costumes (Halston, Diane von Furstenberg, Dior) and the hair (perms, toupees, waves and updos) in American Hustle. And for Jennifer Lawrence in general. And for gifs while you are at it.

Sing hallelujah for Iris Apfel. The woman is 92 and widely considered to be the most stylish individual in the world.

Rejoice at Sonia Rykiel’s catwalk shows: always fun, never dull. With shaking hips and dance moves.

Be proud of Tavi Gevinson, the teeny fashion blogger turned feminist publishing phenomenon.

Give thanks for full skirts, you can do twirls in them.

Take a moment to remember the Ikea monkey, and, indeed, all animals who wear human clothes.

Now, enjoy the fact that Liam Gallagher looks a bit like the Ikea monkey.

Revel in the invention of onesies. Anticipate the fleecy embrace you’ll receive later today.

Get rapturous over cashmere jumpers, the office-appropriate equivalent of onesies.

Look forward to a bubble bath later. We know you got toiletries for Christmas.

Delight in love. The sexy kind.

And the platonic too.

Oh and don't forget cats, kings of the internet, queens of the fashion industry. Happy 2014, y'all.
