Marcia Kilgore spontaneous chop based on a YSL campaign model

The beauty entrepreneur took a YSL campaign image into her hairdresser; this is what happened

‘I went to see Garren in New York with a photo of a model in the Yves Saint Laurent ad that I saw in February 2012, thinking, ‘I could pull that off, if maybe it wasn’t quite as extreme.’ And there he is, the Master. Sheepishly, I look at him and whisper, ‘I have this, uh.. picture..’ Bearing in mind you never take a picture from a magazine with a hairstyle to someone like him.

It felt completely inappropriate but Garren took one look and said, ‘yes I can do that’ and before I know it, four inches of what was my fringe falls into my lap. What was meant to be a less extreme version of the picture ended up as a cutting edge (ironic), fearless statement that left me feeling quite exposed and very vulnerable.

There’s nothing quite as addictive as a Garren haircut (and a good bit of retouching on your headshot!). I ended up meeting with the beauty editor of W Magazine just after my appointment and relayed to her the whole saga that had been my hair cut that day. She promptly commissioned the story for the magazine! It came out in the June issue of W that summer.

Generally short haircuts suit me and I prefer being a dark blonde shade. I like architectural, angular styles best of all, which is what I have now.’
