How Gwyneth's hair told the story of her relationships
It's all over. After ten years of marriage, Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin are no more. But you already know that, don't you - because it's been blasted out from all corners of the globe for the last 17 hours. Not even the floods got this much coverage in the UK news press. And yet, you can kind of understand why so much time and space has been devoted to the reporting of a marriage break-up; because this was no ordinary marriage, these were no ordinary people.
Gwyneth and Chris represented a magnititude of possibilities to our generation; they were cool, united, health-conscious without banging on about it (too much), thinkers, dreamers, parents and philanthropists. They were also rich and beautiful. Theirs was a marriage that became the archetype of what modern happiness could look like. But this isn't the first time Gwyneth has led us by example - the visceral love she shared with Brad Pitt in the 90s influenced all my subsequent relationships. If we didn't look as happy as they did, then it was probably not going to work.
Lest we forget, Brad and Gwyneth were so in love that at one point, in a fug of late 90s premieres and red-carpets, they got matching haircuts. It's a moment that underpins something we all know to be true; our hair is reflection (however large or small) of our state of mind. And Gwyneth, along with the relationship journeys we feel like we went on with her, is a perfect example of this.
