Want to know your fashionable future? You need this lot

by

Wondering how Uranus will affect your spring look? You’re not alone. Designers, stylists and fashion folk have long followed the shifting of the planets, consulted the Tarot, and worked with psychics and sensitives to forecast the future.

Donna Karan (a Libran) is a self-professed 'astrology nut' who undergoes a tough regime of invasive aura cleanses, painful-sounding chakra realignments, and psychic consultations; Karl Lagerfeld (a Virgo) also has an enduring love of astrology, and Net-a-Porter’s Natalie Massenet (Taurean; can see ghosts) grew up surrounded by her father’s famous psychic friends, one of whom foresaw that her purpose in life was to be a leader.

It follows that a career spent predicting trends lends itself to a certain affinity with divination, and it seems both industries – fashion and fortune-telling – can be peopled by big personalities, eccentrics with a penchant for the fantastical. In fact, at Anya Hindmarch's intergalactic-themed spring 2014 show, each ticket came with a personalised birth chart, listing your spirit animal, birthstone and much, much more (you can check yours here).

The New York fashion set swears by astrologer Susan Miller, founder of AstrologyZone (and mother of Lower East Side hipster designer Chrissie Miller), and Rose-Marie Swift (also a make-up artist and wellness advocate) whose clients are the great and good of the fashion world. In London it’s Shelley Von Strunkel (Melanie Rickey is a fan) and sensitives at the College of Psychic Studies, readers at iconic London mystical shop Mysteries or Treadwell’s, London’s leading esoteric bookstore. And then there’s the mysteriously named Lady Lilac... Here follows the UK’s top fashion psychics who use their gifts for a rather practical magic.

Jayne Wallace
The Psychic Sisters are Jayne Wallace’s army of spiritual ladies who, for the past eight years, have offered psychic readings and intuitive shopping advice from their permanent space at Selfridges. Jayne – who has been clairvoyant since the age of five – just advised an Oscar nominee on her award ceremony dress, collaborated with make-up artist Charlotte Tilbury on a series of lipstick readings, and recently granted an audience with Kim Kardashian. 'I’m afraid I didn’t really know who she was at the time,' admits Jayne, 'but she seemed lovely.'

Lady Lilac
Jacqui Cosham, aka Lady Lilac, is arguably London’s most fashiony fashion psychic. As a onetime Conde Nast staff member, Jacqui would informally give readings to the great and good of Vogue House, was resident psychic at Mary Portas’ shop inside House of Fraser, and is now a freelance tarot reader, with a little psychometry (the art of channeling spiritual energy through objects) on the side. Her business – built on clients from the publishing world, but also actors and agents – includes a bespoke mystical hen night advisory service. Cosmos and crystal balls, anyone?

Shelley Von Strunckel
California-born opera aficionado Shelley brings a touch of real Hollywood glamour to the British astrology circuit. Her predictions – which first appeared in The Sunday Times more than 20 years ago – are published in titles around the world, including Tatler and ES Magazine in the UK. With past experience in fashion merchandising and business, she’s a conference speaker, an unofficial philosopher of sorts, and a serial Tweeter and party-thrower, hosting dinners and drinks parties at her apartment on the canal at Kings Cross. She can be booked for private consultations and events.

Amaryllis Fraser
The former Harper’s, Tatler and Elle model turned Ghostbuster (or rather, remover of bad energies and spirits) works her unique brand of magic on the upscale properties of London’s posh types. The society sensitive, together with her spirit guide the late Lady Ruth Balfour (Amaryllis’ great-grandmother), psychically spring clean troubled homes. Her talents revealed themselves after she hit the side of her head in a car accident and woke up seeing and hearing spirits everywhere. A bit like Ricky Gervais in Ghost Town. Can be booked in person or readings by phone.

Georgia Coleridge
College of Psychic Studies graduate Georgia Coleridge heals physical, emotional and spiritual ailments from her practice in Chelsea. Married to Nicholas Coleridge, president of Conde Nast international (whose godchildren include Cara Delevingne and Edie Campbell), she has experience in past life healing, ancestor clearing and spirit release – and she’s been practicing yoga since the early 90s (way before it was cool). Georgia’s focus isn’t prediction as such, but on making people feel better. And, at just £50 a pop, who doesn’t want that?

Louise Androlia
Artist, lingerie designer, spell-caster: Louise Androlia is tarot’s new guard, a fashiony energy worker styled like 90s pop star Cathy Dennis whose predictions appear on blogs like Mademoiselle Robot and wellness site Live the Process. A chronic pain condition in her early 20s saw Louise discover holistic therapies and helped her realize her own Disney-like brand of magic. Commission her for personal ‘Tarotscopes’ or join one of her ‘Energy Awareness’ workshops – a bit like juicing, but for the soul.
