Kate Bosworth may list her job as actress on her tax return, but we reckon she should change that to beauty icon instead. One minute she’s pulling off edgy wet-look hair for her new Topshop collection campaign and the next, she’s hitting the Big Sur film premiere sporting this beautifully elegant hair plait that has a touch of Grace Kelly about it.

Sure, at first glance, it may look like she just pinned a schoolgirl plait on top of her head, but upon closer inspection (always, always take a second look), the slick sides and elegant central arrangement remind us of the ‘spinal’ hair seen at Todd Lynn’s autumn 2011 show.

Created by Toni & Guy’s Sacha Mascolo-Tarbuck, Sacha used an inside-out plaiting technique to make the braid sit on the head, and then juxtaposed it with a sleek low ponytail to create an eerie spinal effect. 

So, we think it’s about time we followed Kate’s spinal-plaited lead - ditch the girly fishtail braids and grow some backbone.
