Spraychalk is the new word in pastel hair: we try it out
I have never done the pastel hair thing, mainly because my hair is so wrecked from dyeing that I thought it was best left alone. And also because at 28, I’m probably too old for any perma-pastels. Am I, right? The new Bumble & Bumble Spraychalks, £15 are a pretty non-invasive alternative and would neither damage my hair, not stick around any longer than a weekend impulse.
Most of us thought pastel hair might have died away by now, but it seems to be more than a passing fad. There’s something really pretty about it that still feels a bit alternative, so I think people find it adds edge to their look while still being totally accessible. It’s as much the territory of Lauren Conrad as it is Charlotte Free. It’s also far more easily maintained than a saturated colour as usually, you want it to look washed out. Plus, I’d say Tumblr is doing a pretty good job of keeping the trend alive. So many pictures of rainbow hair!
The Bumble Spraychalks take a bit of practice to avoid it looking too patchy, but otherwise they're really easy to use. And anyway, a slightly haphazard finish is pretty key to the trend - it's not about looking too ‘done’. I’ve seen some amazingly colourful dye-jobs come out of the salon (Bleach’s Instagram feed is something to behold), but if you just want a quick bit of colour without hours in the chair, or the foresight of booking an appointment, then it’s perfect.
I’d love to layer up a few colours next time for full My Little Pony effect.
