There’s something so out and out joyous about a gigantic Afro. And as big hair goes, it’s infinitely cooler than a bubble perm.  In fact, it’s as cool as it gets. But for a while, it remained virtually absent from the covers of the magazines, save for the magnificently effervescent Solange Knowles.

So, leave it to the sexy prince of pop to wedge it firmly back into the hair agenda by sporting a rather buoyant Afro on this month’s V cover, looking more regal and princely than he has done in years.

But, he’s just been trumped. Outdone by none other than the mother of American daytime TV. Oprah. Or Queen Oprah, to use her full name, has just graced the cover of her self-titled magazine (fabulously, as she does each month) with the hugest diameter of Afro that the world has clapped its eyes on.

This is Guinness book of world records stuff, surely? Not that she’s short of lasting legacies, but Oprah’s created something that’s going to prove pretty impossible to beat. For a long time.
