New face Sophia gets beehived into chicness
The model faces of tomorrow meet the beauty trends of today, here, every week
Jeez. There’s nothing like a beehive to put the wind up you. And I tell you, there were more than ever this season, with just about everyone from Thierry Mugler (clean, neat, swept down into a ponytail) to Maria Grachvogel (slightly quiff-ed, dressage horse-esque and chic as hell) doing variations on the look. The joy this season though is that the Marge Simpson/Amy Winehouse connotations have been well and truly left behind – it’s feminine elegance as far as the eye can see. And while such a style looks utterly fabulous on the heads of Bette Franke and Sasha Luss, it’s one that most of us look at and think, ‘Yikes! On me? Might look more Halloween dress-up than sartorially cool.’
So, there was only one thing for it, trying it out in real life. Well, you might argue that new face model Sophia isn’t exactly real life, such is her flawless, freckled skin and rich chocolate hair, but still, it was real and we saw it with our own eyes. She’s a new signing at Select models, having just thrown the cloth in on her art foundation course, such is the lure of the modelling world (and a far flung modelling trip to Dubai she raved to us about). Arriving in the cutest off-duty outfit we’ve seen in yonks – skinny jeans, camisole, stylish black trainers with white frilled socks – it was the head of thick, glossy hair that leaned forward and told us it really, really wanted to be beehived.
If you think a beehive requires a trunk load of sprays, gels and pins galore, you’re wrong. Quickly dispelling such a myth is Tigi Bed Head Oh Bee Hive Matte Dry Shampoo, which timed its debut superbly now that the style is such a ‘thing’ this season. The spray is miraculous, it really is. We all love a bit of dry shampoo for a gentle root-lift now and again – grease or no grease – and this does exactly that. Instantly making hair matte and more voluminous, it gives height like no other. The magic is, that even with hair as heavy as our Sophia’s here, it still leaves a Brigitte Bardot-esque chicness that’s straight-talking and glamorous. And just like that, we’re surprisingly smitten.
