Daphne Guinness's epic style
As the heiress to the Guinness fortune, one might presume that it would have been mighty tempting for Daphne to roll around in £1000 notes, laughing. But no. Despite an absurdly gilded childhood, whereby she holidayed in an 18th century monastery in Cadaques with Salvador Dali as next-door-neighbour, Daphne has refused to be a trust fund baby and opted to become a fashion tour de force, personified.
"Daphne is one of - if not the - most stylist women living," says Tom Ford. Hence why FIT (the Fashion Institute of Technology, New York) chose to pay homage to her fearless style in 2011 through an exhibition of hundreds of her outfits. Result = couture heaven. She's been the muse of Karl Lagerfeld, Gareth Pugh and Philip Treacy. And we all know that she was best friend to the late Alexander McQueen, shrouding herself in black veils after his untimely demise.
Most of all, Daphne is unique. If she can't find the clothes, jewellery or even perfume she wants to wear that day, she simply goes off and creates it herself, bespoke. In 2010 alone, this led to her amassing 100 new pieces. Props doesn't quite cover it.
