How fast do you get out the door in the morning?
Katy Perry has revealed that her beauty routine takes an hour and a half every morning. We call that a LOT of time to not be in bed. Here the Never Underdressed team spill the beans on that how long we spend on our hair and make-up each morning.
Joanna McGarry, beauty director: 30 mins 'My ritual is sprawling and complex. After showering, I dart around the room, half attempting to syphon an outfit together and half slathering my limbs in body cream and fragrance (behind the knees, wrists and back of my neck). Then, I simultaneously meld a few drops of Moroccan Oil to the ends of my hair (which I allow to air dry), whilst applying my Skinceuticals Phloretin CF antioxidant serum to my face, followed by eye cream, moisturiser and currently, SPF 50. Once all this is done, there's seldom any time for make-up, so that often goes on, regrettably, in the public forum that is the Bakerloo line tube. [The whole charade takes around half an hour.]'
Carrie Tyler, editor: 60 mins ‘I leave the house precisely an hour after my alarm goes off. I’m a routine nutjob, with a borderline Sleeping with the Enemy sequence of events. I get a lot done in that hour – but I guess that’s subjective - and it goes to the repetitive tune of: check email and Twitter, shower and wash hair, thorough moisturisation, make hot water and honey and a juice, hug sleeping husband while kettle boils, blowdry hair, put make-up on, check weather, decide what to wear, wear it, pack handbag, download newspaper, hug still sleeping husband, leave, tut at the mess the nearby builders are making, look for someone to berate, chicken out.’
Angelica Hermon, beauty writer: 20 mins ‘I’m super speedy in the morning. I always prefer showering or having a bath at night so as soon as I wake up its simply: wash face, brush teeth, choose an outfit – which I might have thought about the night before or else my wardrobe doors fly open and I’ll hope to feel inspired by what I see. Five minutes later it’s my very minimal beauty regime of moisturiser, mascara and a spot of concealer. I’ll have a glass of water and be out the door within 20 minutes or so. I’m only ever delayed if no outfit choice is working and most of my clothes end up all over the bed.’
Ursula Lake, fashion director: 120 mins ‘I get up at 6am and the first thing I do is feed my three cats! Then I normally check my emails and attend to anything urgent. I try to do at least 40 minutes of exercise, and sometimes I go to yoga or pilates class for an hour. I’ll follow that with a protein shake, a shower and then my very minimal beauty regime of tinted moisturiser, mascara, lip-balm and bronzer before getting out the door at 8am. My make-up only takes two minutes tops, but I’m afraid sometimes I’ll be that woman applying her make-up on the tube. I can still do it in two minutes, but this depends on how packed and jostling the tube is…’
Laura Silver, staff writer: 50 mins ‘After hitting snooze for ages, I get up just after 7am, shower and brush my teeth. I’ll put 6Music on the radio while I cleanse with rose water and apply moisturiser, followed by make-up. Before applying concealer, I’ll use one of Smashbox’s many primers, depending what my skin’s like that day, so that make-up lasts into the evening. I’ll fill in my eyebrows with a pencil because they’re blonde and invisible and then either do some contouring with eyeshadow and a flick of eyeliner, or if I’m wearing a dark or bright lipstick, just a neutral eyeshadow and mascara – otherwise it looks too ‘done’.
I save time by choosing my outfit the previous day, so I’ll throw on whatever that is and spray my hair with Bumble & Bumble’s Tonic followed by Clynol hair oil to tame it a bit. I’ll use grips to fix it into a style if it’s looking especially wild, or just leave it loose. I then quickly put on my usual rings and necklace, a hefty spritz of Chanel No.19 and shoes. Before leaving I download a Spotify playlist so I can listen to it offline on the tube, grab my lunch and I’ll be out the door by 8am.’
Elin Evans, junior fashion editor: 45 mins ‘I’m surprisingly efficient in the morning (I can hear my boyfriend disagreeing as I type this). My daily routine is: wake up, shower, coffee, plan outfit, make-up, out the door. When I’m shooting or on a deadline I can get this down to 30 mins, but day to day it’s more like 45 mins.’
Kelly Bowerbank, assistant editor: 80 mins ‘It takes me about an hour and twenty minutes from my alarm going off to get out of the house. That sounds like a long time (especially as I don’t eat or drink anything until I get to work), like I must faff around with lots of make-up and extravagant hair styling, but I don’t. At least 25 minutes of that time is spent in the shower even, when I’m not washing my hair. I find it impossible to shower quickly, and I eye with suspicion anyone who can do it in just a few minutes. After that things go a little something like this: tone, moisturise, pencil in eyebrows. Put on blusher, decide not to put any on my nose. Two coats of mascara. Decide to add blusher to my nose after all. Check weather, put a couple of things in the dishwasher, look to see if any of the neighbours' cats are out the back - get excited if they are! Open the wardrobe, pick an item at random and proceed to build an outfit around it (inevitably this ends up with me scrambling on top of cupboards and crawling under beds looking for that [insert long forgotten accessory here] to complete the look). Next comes hair, which goes in one of two directions: left messily down or messily pinned up (either way it’s a few minutes job max). And then I’m in my shoes, checking I have my phone and work keys before I kiss my sleeping boyfriend goodbye and I’m out the door.’
Harriet Walker, news editor: 45 mins ‘I wish I could say I spend five hours at one of those dressing tables with a frilly pink skirt. In reality, I set my alarm an hour early so I can snooze (I know: masochism). Once I'm finally up, my combo of Aveda's Blue Malva shampoo and fragrant Philip Kingsley conditioner sharpens the senses a bit. Whenever I go to France, I stock up on Petit Marseillais shower gel, as I love the smell and it’s great for sensitive skin.
For a lazy person, I'm surprisingly good at moisturising so I slap on Kiehls Creme de Corps everywhere I can reach, then I do my make-up ASAP after washing my face (it seems to stay on longer but I'm not sure there's any scientific proof of this). On good skin days, I mix Dr Perricone's No-Foundation Foundation into facial moisturiser for a lift; on a hangover, I trowel on the Bobbi Brown long wear even finish stuff. Then Chantecaille mascara and Illamasqua eyeliner - which I ran out and only recently replaced; I felt like myself again.
Picking clothes is where things go wrong. Yes I work in fashion, no I can't dress myself. If I'm honest, I work on a comfort to professionalism sliding scale that alters according to how important I need to look that day. I leave the house about 45 minutes after I get up - which, for a ditherer, isn’t bad at all.’
