The 'old lady' hair rinse makes a comeback

by

Maintaining a dye job is an expensive business, both in terms of time and money. This is especially true in London, where a colour can easily run into triple figures and is likely to wipe half a day out of your calendar.

That’s why Daniel Hersheson’s new ‘Rinse Revival’ menu, priced at just £35 a treatment, instantly appealed. It also came with the reassurance that, even with a blow dry tacked on to the end of it (at an extra cost), you’ll still be out of the salon in an hour. SOLD.

A rinse is essentially a toner, designed to complement your current hair colour rather than bring about a drastic change. Hitherto the preserve of old ladies, Daniel Hersheson's Colour Director Sibi Bolan has set out to bring it up to date. She has created six bespoke shades inspired by stars of the silver screen (who were partial to a rinse themselves back in the day), including Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn and Rita Hayworth.

Because I’m currently ginger, I opted for the Rita – a bright, reddish orange named after Rita Hayworth. It transformed my locks from a pale apricot into a fiery, vibrant copper. I instantly loved the colour, and it made my hair super soft and shiny.

The next day the number of compliments I received from people skyrocketed, which reassured me that my immediate gut feeling - one of smugness - was right. I got a crazy amount of emoticon love via Whatsapp from the family. The NEVER team all cooed. A women stopped me while shopping in Cos to ask if it was natural (when I confessed it wasn't, she demanded to know where she could get it done). Office men, the ones who don’t even notice when I wear birds on my head, raved about how nice the colour was - completely unprompted.

As the name ‘rinse’ suggests, it does wash out over time. The official line is that it will last up to 10 shampoos, but after eight, mine’s still going pretty strong. And that’s unusual for a red dye (which famously fades much quicker than other shades).

Several weeks and washes in though and I’m still happy. The colour has definitely faded, but it continues to look lovely and I’m really enjoying the evolution of orange after each shampoo. Right now it’s a tint I like to call Red Panda.

Part of that feeling of happiness is the value that this colour offers. Yes, it looks great, but it’s also affordable luxury. You can go to a fancy salon in London and come out with a fabulous head of hair for less than £40! Even if you factor in buying a new towel (I forgot and turned a white one neon orange) it's still going to put a smile on your face. Which is why I’ve already booked in for another Rita.

The Revival Rinse is available exclusively at Daniel Hersheson's on Harvey Nichols' 4th Floor priced at £35 for a solo colour. To book, call 0207 201 8797.
