Meet Kinara, the latest skincare export from LA
If a skincare line is doing well in LA then it’s doing something right. The geographical nucleus of HD TV and paparazzi doesn’t deal well with the mediocre. So, when a brand makes its way over here from ruthless Californian hills, it bodes well for us. Very well.
Enter Kinara, the skincare line beloved of Drew Barrymore and Johnny Depp (he of the ridiculously youthful Peter Pan complexion). The ten-strong range comprises everything you’d ever really want on your bathroom shelf – like a capsule wardrobe for your skin – with formulas which treat skincare concerns effectively but not aggressively. So that’s calming cleansers that gently lift off dirt, deeply hydrating serums that quickly fade pillow lines in the morning and soothing tonics which clarify pores without stripping skin. The jewel in the crown though, is undoubtedly the Lactic Acid Hydrating Serum, £58, which contains alpha-hydroxy acid to flitter away age lines, dry skin and even those bleurgh random breakouts that crop up from time to time. And don’t be fooled by the unfussy packaging (it’s from LA, remember), the formulas are as potent as they are kind.
Encouragingly, Kinara is not born of a mega-brand marketing meeting, but from the celebrated West Hollywood clinic of the same name, founded by renowned facialist, and the quite fabulously named Olga Lorencin-Northrup. She is the woman actresses turn to when they feel the impending panic of a red carpet edging closer. What she doesn’t know about skin isn’t worth knowing.
‘After a lifetime of trying every product and treating every type of skin, I knew what the market and the client needed,’ says Olga Lorencin-Northrup. ‘Products that are effective, simple to use, that won’t make skin break out if they are oily and not dry them out further if they’re dry. These are product that utilize the latest technology in an understated elegant way.’ And it looks like she’s got that spot on.
