9 Reasons why Sky Ferreira is the beauty icon of our times

by

Among a sea of cookie-cutter pop princesses, Sky Ferreira is marching to the beat of her own drum. With a new album out, and a new role as Redken's Style Muse, it looks like 2014 might finally be Sky's year. We sat down with Sky to unearth the 9 reasons why she deserves your full attention.

1. She's a visionary with an editorial eye that belies her 21 years
'I see music, moreso than I hear it. So, like, photography is a big influence on my my music. I loved working with Alisdair McLellan, he takes great pictures. And he's fast. Those are the two big things; I like to shoot fast.'

2. She's a walking contradiction; one part ballsy young adult, the other part vulnerable young girl
'I feel comfortable in front of a camera if I'm on a shoot, but I hate having my picture taken otherwise.'

3. She reads books we like to pretend we are reading
'I don't get much time for it, but I've been reading Kim Gordon's [of Sonic Youth, below] mini-essays lately.'

4. She's not a victim, refusing to launch her new album, Night Time, My Time, until she was completely happy with it (much to the chagrin of the men in suits)
'Women are definitely seen as sexual objects in the music business. After a while, you learn it's better to just do things your way.'

5. You won't find her at the opening of an envelope, parading for the paparazzi
'I live with my boyfriend in New York. We don't really go out much and we're not really part of a scene. We like to just stay at home and watch American Horror Story.'

6. She's wise enough to do the meditation thing that Steve Jobs and The Beatles swore by (this can only be a good thing)
'I don't really have anything particular that I always do before a show, but I've just started doing transcendental meditation which seems to help get into the right space in my head.'

7. She promotes the importance of women supporting other women
Of Miley Cyrus, who she'll be supporting for her upcoming tour, she told Q Magazine: 'She's really supportive of other girls her age, which I don't usually find with other pop stars. That's why I don't get it when people call her a bad feminist. She's one of the most supportive artists I've met.'

8. She has a pathological habit of fearlessly changing up her look
'Yeah. I like to dye my hair a lot. It's a spontaneous thing. I don't take all that stuff [beauty] too seriously.'

9. She's more interested in art than controversy
'I don't have a problem with nudity [on the cover of her new album, below]. I didn't intend for it to be topless, that's just how it happened. I don't even think it looks particularly sexual. It's about a certain mood.'
