Blitz: the acceptable face of Eighties fashion

by

The phrase '80s fashion' may seem an oxymoron, or it might just remind you of ra-ra skirts and those strange headless microphones on TOTP that seemed so very futuristic at the time.

Either way, proof that Eighties fashion is more than both of these things – so much more – comes in the form of fashion historian, prolific author and all-round sartorial expert Iain R. Webb's new book As seen in Blitz: Fashioning 80s Style. Named for the magazine whose shoots fill its pages, the coffee table treasure catalogues the quirk, irreverance and innovation of the decade that so many believe style forgot.

Blitz, along with The Face and i-D, was one of the style magazines that shaped an era, and a generation of creatives. During its lifespan from 1982 to 1987, it jump-started the careers of those who now preside over much of the industry. Its contributors list reads like a fashion almanac: Hamish Bowles, Jean Paul Gaultier, Stefano Tonchi and Stephen Jones, to name but a few, who were part of a publication and party scene that forcibly and forever shaped youth culture, and that ensured style came from the streets rather than from the upper echelons.

And all of it set against a backdrop of hard times and bad suits. What better to inspire you on a Monday morning?

As Seen in Blitz: Fashioning 80s Style is published by ACC Editions on 17th May, £35; the ICA is celebrating its release with a programme of events from 18 May
