Harley Viera Newton on mixing cats with DVF

by

If you’re at all familiar with New York DJ Harley Viera Newton’s Instagram account, you’ll no doubt be au fait with, and even perhaps have fallen in love with, Marmite, her slinky black cat. You’ll see her reclining in a Hermes box, trying on fancy jewellery, and now as the star of a new collaboration with DVF. In the form of the gorgeously beaded ‘Feline Fetish Bag’ and a supercool pair of cat decorated headphones, Marmite meets fashion, and you’ll no doubt love these IRL incarnations of one if the internet’s best cats as much as you do the online version.

Marmite is unfortunately too busy napping and eating to give interviews right now, so instead we spoke to her stylish owner Harley Viera Newton about the collaboration with DVF and the Breakfast at Tiffany’s inspired film for the collection…

Why do you think fashion folk love cats so much?
What's not to love? I think cats are a great way to have fun with fashion - they're classic and playful at the same time.

How did this collaboration come about?
I had Dj-ed a few events for DVF and really loved Diane and the brand. I have always had an interest in exploring design and the collaboration was a natural progression.

Tell us about Marmite! How long have you had her and how did she inspire you for this collection? Is that really her in the video?
Yes that is Marmite in the video! I adopted her from a shelter in midtown 5 years ago - they found her in a box in Chinatown. She was tiny when I rescued her but now she’s a bear! She's a little bit of a diva and had stage fright when we first started shooting... but I think she secretly loves the camera.

Do you remember the first time you saw Breakfast at Tiffany's
As a crazy cat lady, I have always appreciated the relationship between Holly and Cat. We tried to recreate the party scene but for a little twist shot parts from Marmite's point of view.

What's typical day in the life of a fashion DJ like?
It really depends on the day. Today I am working on Holiday playlists for a client and then have to catch a plane to London!

What's your favorite part of the holidays?
Christmas is a huge family event for me because we are spread out all over the world and it's a time for us all be under one roof. We have a tradition of baking holiday cookies and cupcakes on Christmas eve. I want to attempt a gingerbread house this year!

What are the best clubs in New York?
I recently went to Paul Sevigny's new club Baby Grand and really loved it. It's a great cosy spot for drinks with friends.

What's on your party playlist?
Lots of the classics - The Clash, The Cure, The Smiths, Prince…
