London Fashion Week hat tribes: beanies Vs. caps

by

The stormy wind that whirled around London has had show-goers reaching for their hats at Fashion Week, and there were two distinct hat tribes protecting their blow-dries: the beanie gang and the cap crew.

When Jil Sander showed a veiled beanie for spring 2012 it returned to the realms of high fashion, and it's become a staple of many-an-editor's fashion week wardrobe over the past few seasons.

Now that sportswear has gone fully luxe, it's no surprise to see plenty of peaky baseball caps bobbing around Somerset House too. Fancy fashion versions of course - you'll see no New York Yankees or trucker caps around these parts.

Here's how people have been wearing beanies and baseball caps at the London shows...

Tribe 1: Caps

A simple navy cap creates an utterly modern spin on this prim look.

Matching cap and coat for a streamlined addition to this super-slouchy look.

This cap is the perfect cherry on this sport-meets-chic style-cake.

Flipping it backwards adds playful nonchalance to a statement trophy coat.

Tribe 2: the beanie.

A super-straight bob looks great poking out from underneath a chunky knit.

Red lipstick and a smart coat with a beanie make the best dress-up/dress-down mix.

Going tonal and softening this otherwise sporty look.

The beanie can even be ladylike, as per this cute veiled bobble hat from Bernstock Spiers.

Which tribe are you in?
