Ripped jeans become fashion week macro trend

by

Fashion editors are tearing it up in New York this fashion week with a little help from a growing trend for ripped jeans.

Despite the snow and icy wind, draughty denim is the most popular trend on the street so far. Junya is a predictably popular purveyor of ripped denim, enviably demonstrated by Taylor Tomassi-Hill, but really anything goes.

Early 90s Drew and Winona are a good place to take inspiration from with casually cut-up stonewash denim, worn with leather - boots and jacket - for full devil-may-care biker effect.

And remember, the 90s take on this trend is all in the slouch, made all the more wearable with a neat, boot-showing ankle-roll.

Extremists can go to town with full-on cut-outs.

Although a slimmer-fitting, high-waisted cut with a subtle knee rip lets you try the trend while still looking smart.

Taylor Tomassi-Hill's frayed Junya pair give a strong grunge impression without letting as much draft in. A New York winter pro at work if you ever saw one.

Ditto Joan Smalls' casually distressed worker jeans worn with her Givenchy boots.

A wide open knee is an easy update to the model-off-duty staple of skinny jeans, and totally toughens up sporty neon trainers.

Imagine this look without the slight rips. Would boots and plain jeans get you going as much? Proof that it's the little things that make a huge difference.

Watch out jeans, the scissors are coming for you. A subtle interpretation here.
