The Grease characters who've inspired modern-day beauty doubles
Somewhere around 1994 I lost 75% of my six-week summer holiday holed up in my friend's lounge, curtains drawn, watching Grease. It didn't matter that it was made two years before I was born, or that by this point, a slightly less lithe John Travolta was working his hand jive again in Pulp Fiction.
The exploits of the, puzzlingly mature, teenagers of Rydell High was, in some tiny way, aligned with my own teenage coming of age and by the time autumn term came around, I could repeat the dialogue verbatim.
Fast forward 20 years and what I wasn't expecting was the lasting legacy it would have on the beauty looks of today. Especially when it comes to the bastions of celebrity culture who grace our news stands on a daily basis - your Katy Perrys, your Scarlet Johanssons. Of course, they might have experienced a similar Grease love-in like me, or maybe it's just a strange sort of retro synchronicity. Either way, there's definitely something in it.
Below, the stars of Grease who've had a lasting effect on the celebrity beauty looks of now.
1. Taylor Swift is so the square Sandy.
Forget everything you ever heard about that night in a hotel room with Harry Styles, or whatever, Taylor's ruler straight fringe and equine ponytail is as pure as the driven snow, just like Sandra Dee.
2. Alex Turner is channeling Danny via the medium of hair.
They had to order in brylcreem by the vat on the set of Grease but who'd of thought over 30 years later that the oiled quiff would be so back in fashion?
3. Oh hang on, or is it Kenickie?
4. Beauty school drop out Lady Gaga in her Frenchy phase.
Like Frenchy, Gaga operates on the periphery of beauty boundaries. Pink hair, pink ladies. It figures. It surprised us all when pastel hair made a comeback a few years back, but French and hair-soulmate Gaga were well ahead of the curve.
5. Pixie Geldof is the Rizzo of the front row.
I mean, with that cropped coiff and defiant red lip, you just wouldn't mess, would you?
6. Jan taught Katy Perry all there is to know about geek chic.
The look relies heavily on your props: gum and glasses. The fringe also has to be at least a finger's width above the brows.
7. Marty's dance up 'do was the height of sophistication. Scarlet Johansson thinks so too.
The rolled fringe and slicked back sides are uncannily similar. It was enough to woo DJ Vince Fontaine anyway...
8. J-Lo and "Cha Cha" DiGregorio - separated at birth?
Not only can they both bust a move (Cha Cha's the best dancer at St Bernadettes, remember?), they both share a penchant for untamed manes, power brows and a statement lip. Eyes and teeth, remember ladies, eyes and teeth.
9. Suki Waterhouse channels Patti Simcox with her top-knot pony.
Patti's cheerleader ponytail was a very different beast from Sandy's. It was restrained, yet desperately flirty at the same time. Suki's even managed the wrapped-around-the-base segment which can be devilishly tricky.
10. Rita Ora does finale Sandy's bad-girl curls and patent red lip.
Nothing says rebel like a peroxide pin curl and inky black kohl. From 1978 to 2014, not an awful lot has changed then has it?
