House of Hackney flagship opens
Palm prints, fringed lampshades and chintz: the interior of House of Hackney's new Shoreditch flagship isn't what you might immediately think of as cool. But neither are the label's printed clothes and homeware obviously 'on-trend' (sorry). More, they just emit good taste through a knowingly ironic vintage feel.
The label aims to replenish our parched sense of aesthetics after more than a decade of popular minimalism, a school of design the founders find 'bland'. Flying ducks on a wall instead? Go on then. And the flagship, which opened last night, is a mausoleum to those post-war tastes.
'We’re so excited to be launching our first store in the heart of Shoreditch,' says co-founder Frieda Gormley. 'The creativity surrounding East London is what inspires us, so our new home couldn’t be more perfectly located. We’ve collaborated with some amazing people on the store itself, from MRA Architects and Wild At Heart to Andy Tillman, who has designed a stained glass window for us. It was really important to Javvy [Royle, her husband and co-founder of the label] and I to create an engaging experience for our customers in-store, and I hope we have done just that.’
