The most popular designers of awards season

by

We’ve spent hour upon hour of 2014 poring over images of famous women in glitzy dresses, but finally award season has come to a close. It’s time to take stock of the real stars of the red carpet – the designers.

We’ve crunched the numbers of the official red carpets at the Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild Awards, Grammys, BAFTAs and Academy Awards to work out which label was the most worn of the season. And that award goes to... Gucci.

Seven high-profile women opted to wear Gucci's figure-hugging gowns: Mila Kunis and Olivia Wilde at the Golden Globes; Lupita Nyong'o for her win at the SAG Awards; Taylor Swift at the Grammys; Naomie Harris at the BAFTAs, and Anne Hathaway and Amy Adams at the Oscars.

Hot on Gucci's heels came three labels that appeared six times each.

No surprise that Dior dressed campaign star Jennifer Lawrence for the Golden Globes, SAGs and Oscars...

...but the label was also worn by Emma Watson at the Globes, Lupita Nyong'o at the BAFTAs and a fierce Charlize Theron at the Oscars.

Donatella Versace hit gold with her collection of slinky gowns in muted blues and pale pinks.

Amber Heard, Jada Pinkett-Smith, Kate Hudson and Lady Gaga all chose the label – and Uma Thurman wore Versace twice, at the Globes and then the BAFTAs.

Alber Elbaz proved he can dress women of all ages – the six women wearing Lanvin ranged from 23-year-old Emma Roberts and Rita Ora to 64-year-old Meryl Streep.

Emma Thompson also chose a Lanvin dress for the Golden Globes; Sandra Bullock wore a draped, metallic dress at the SAGs; and Maggie Gyllenhaal chose a heavily embellished gown for the BAFTAs.

J. Mendel had a strong red carpet showing, with five actresses wearing the New York label.

The stand-out was Elisabeth Moss in a punk-ish look (and flipping a suitably rebellious finger to E!'s 'mani cam'). Also in J. Mendel were Kate Mara at the Golden Globes, Michelle Dockery and Gretchen Mol at the SAGs, and Anna Kendrick at the Oscars.

Oscar de la Renta, king of the red carpet princess gown, was popular as ever this season.

The designer dressed Michelle Dockery and Zooey Deschanel for the Globes, Isla Fisher and Tina Fey for the SAGs and Jennifer Garner for the Oscars.

The Valentino gowns on the red carpet ranged from the fanciful and frothy (Katy Perry at the Grammys) to the most simple of sheath dresses (Olivia Wilde at the Oscars).

Julia Roberts chose a Valentino jumpsuit for the SAGs, while Amy Adams and Sally Hawkins wore the label for the Globes and Oscars respectively.

And now onto the designers who made four appearances each this awards season...

For the Golden Globes, Zac Posen looked after his friend Lena Dunham and Modern Family star Sofia Vergara. He dressed Kelly Osbourne for the SAGs and – impeccably – Glenn Close for the Oscars.

We have Monique Lhuillier down as dressing four celebrities this season, but four and a half might be more accurate.

Drew Barrymore (plus bump) wore the label at the Globes. Julia Louis DreyfusBreaking Bad's Anna Gunn and Homeland's Morena Baccarin all chose Lhuillier dresses in shades of blue for the SAGs.

Alexander McQueen brought a welcome gothic touch to the red carpet.

Allison Williams, Cate Blanchett and Sandra Bullock all looked beautiful in McQueen gowns, but Cyndi Lauper deserves special mention, for really committing to the look with a cape and heavy necklace.

Givenchy was the only other label that dressed more than three famous women on this season's red carpets.

The brand had a presence at the Globes, SAGs, BAFTAs and Oscars, dressing Jessica Chastain, Cate Blanchett, Imogen Poots and Julia Roberts.

And as for the rest...

Some designers were notably quiet this season. Tom Ford, who is known for red carpet successes including Gwyneth in her white gown and cape combo, didn't dress anyone for this year's Oscars. Ford told Jimmy Kimmel last week that 'It’s not a creative process really, dressing actresses for the Oscars ... You’re working with someone and fulfilling their dream, their agent’s dream, their husband’s dream – they have a preconceived notion of what they want to look like, how they’re marketing this film, and you’re making something for them that actually isn’t particularly creative.'

Two of Ford's dresses did make it to the Golden Globes; one of them was not supplied by the label, but bought off the peg by Nashville actress Hayden Panettiere (the other was worn by Naomi Watts).

Burberry Prorsum, Erdem, Victoria Beckham and Miu Miu made one appearance each. Though Prada dressed the very high-profile Lupita Nyong'o for the Oscars, the label kept a relatively low profile (its other appearance was on Kerry Washington at the SAGs).

Some brands steer clear of the red carpet; others choose their moments sparingly; and some are so synonymous with awards style that it's hard to picture a photo opportunity without them. But in the awards season that has launched Lupita Nyong'o to stardom, there's one clear winner of the red carpet race – and with seven sparkling appearances, that's Gucci.
