As Piper Chapman in Orange is the New Black (AKA the world's favourite TV show), Taylor Schilling portrays a complicated woman, a generally genial, sunny and completely lovable type, who has darkness lurking in her soul: the fact that she is serving time in a prison because she once carried drugs money is really only the tip of the felonious iceberg...

Most of the time she's onscreen, we see her in baggy prison uniforms – in orange and beige – or in grey sportswear, the shapeless garments doing their best, but ultimately failing, to quench her golden glow. When there are flashbacks to Piper's pre-prison life we get a glimpse of her real style, a look that is girly and WASP-y and, if we're honest, a little bit basic. It's like Piper was doing her best to quench her more adventurous side via safe dressing. 

 

The actress who plays Piper, however – the brilliantly talented Taylor Schilling – has a unique style, part glossy New Yorker, part glamorous and golden, with a dash of fashion-forward sophistication. For big red-carpet events – at award ceremonies, for example – she tends to go for lovely flowing gowns, but it's at screenings and photocalls that she really shines, choosing fitted dresses and quirky but classic looks by designers like Roksanda Ilincic and Peter Pilotto.

On down days, she favours a pair of trousers and a blazer, a combination that she looks completely comfortable in.
