Both Sides Now: The two festival trends you'll always want to wear

Music and fashion have been best friends forever, and two of the most enduring musical styles, the Laurel Canyon hippie of the 60s, and the 70s and 80s CBGB punk are currently being celebrated in Both Sides Now, a photographic exhibition at London's National Theatre.

Taken from Corbis's extensive archive, the images, subtitled, Moments in American Music, take us from where boho began, with dreamy images of Joni Mitchell in all her pastoral glory, to edgier ones depicting Debbie Harry and Joan Jett showing us how skin-tight denim and leather jackets should be done in New York's gritty music clubs.

A glance at today's catwalk is all you need to prove that we still can't get enough of these looks, with Valentino tapping into the tripper side of the mid-century mind, and Hedi Slimane continuing his rock and roll dream at Saint Laurent for autumn 2014.

Head down to the National Theatre on London's Southbank to see the free exhibition before 14th June, and click the gallery for a preview of all the summeer festival inspiration you could need.
